Our Story
harness.design was founded by Avario, a developer and UI/UX designer, and Sam, a product designer.
In April 2024, Sam was working on the wiring harness for an electric motorbike being developed for a New Zealand startup. When it came time to design the harness, he looked for the right tool and found nothing that truly fit the job.
Most harness design software is built for large enterprise teams. These tools are expensive, complex, and often rely on table-driven workflows rather than visual interaction. Many feel like legacy desktop applications that have not evolved in years. There was nothing that worked well for independent builders, hobbyists, or anyone designing a wiring harness outside of a large engineering team.
The gap was clear. In many other industries, professional software has gradually become more accessible. CAD is a prime example, where tools once reserved for large companies are now in the hands of individuals and small teams. That democratisation had never really happened in the wiring harness space.
The design philosophy was inspired by PCB tools. Just as PCB software separates the logical schematic from the physical board layout, harness.design follows the same principle. It keeps the electrical design and the physical harness distinct but connected so you can move fluidly between the two.
Development began around mid-2025, and the beta launched at the end of October 2025. Since then, a growing community has formed around the tool, spanning a surprisingly wide range of builders and disciplines. Much of the development direction comes directly from that community, ensuring the tool continues to solve real problems for the people using it.
The long-term goal is to make a powerful harness design tool accessible to those who actually need it, from garage hackers and grassroots motorsport builders to professional race shops looking for a modern alternative to legacy enterprise software.
